Moms are truly amazing! They take care of their households, balance their careers, and follow and achieve their goals. Let’s give a round of applause for all the moms out there.
I’ve always seen myself as someone with limitless dreams. My mother instilled in me the belief that I could achieve anything I wanted, no matter how absurd it may have sounded. I could ask her anything and she would respond, “you can do whatever you want to do in this life”. I never knew how important those words were until I grew up and she was gone. You could say my mother was my biggest motivator, and her belief in me caused me to never stop believing and dreaming.
After finishing my Master’s degree program, I felt stuck for the first time in my life. I didn’t know what was next. I was uncertain about continuing my education and getting my Ph.D. (God knows how much I disliked school) or teaching. However, one thing I was always certain about was becoming a mother. It was like God placed the timing on me. I was a corporate professional at the time I really wanted to become a mother, and I was barely two months into this new role in a new company when the pandemic hit and guess what…I got pregnant.
As a working mother, finding balance can be a challenge. However, I have several tips to help you navigate this journey.
- First and foremost, it is important to believe that it is possible to balance motherhood and a career. It may be difficult, but it is achievable.
- Building a support system is crucial. Find your “village” – people who can help you with childcare, provide emotional support, and offer advice when needed. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and having a strong support system can make all the difference.
- Developing routines can also be helpful. This will allow you to plan your day and prioritize tasks efficiently. For example, waking up early to have some quiet time before the day starts or scheduling time for exercise can be beneficial. - Prioritizing tasks is another important aspect of balancing motherhood and a career. Determine what needs to be done and what can wait, and make sure to communicate with your colleagues and family about your priorities.
- Lastly, it is important to set boundaries and switch off between work mode and mom mode. When you’re at work, focus on work, and when you’re with your children, be present with them. This will help you avoid burnout and maintain your mental health.
Remember, it’s a journey, and finding balance will take time and effort. However, with determination and the right tools, you can achieve success in both your career and motherhood.
